Our Approach to Horsemanship
It’s not just about riding—it’s about understanding.
At Silver Oak Stables, we believe good horsemanship starts on the ground. Riding is just one piece of a much bigger picture. Whether you’re here to saddle up or just to be around horses in a meaningful way, our program is built to give you the skills, confidence, and insight to really connect with them.
This isn’t a one-size-fits-all riding school. Our lessons are personalized, progress at your pace, and are always grounded in respect—for you, the horse, and the process.
🧠 Learn How Horses Think
We don’t just tell you what to do—we show you why it matters. You'll learn how horses use body language to communicate, how to read their signals, and how to respond in ways that build trust and partnership. This is especially helpful for nervous riders or anyone who wants to feel more confident and capable around horses.
👣 Groundwork Matters
A lot of riding problems start on the ground. That’s why we place a big emphasis on leading, grooming, tying, and all the small but important moments that happen outside the saddle. These are the building blocks of safe, effective, and rewarding horsemanship—and honestly, they’re pretty fun too.
🐴 Care, Not Just Control
Our students learn how to care for horses the right way—from feeding and grooming to recognizing signs of discomfort or illness. We want you to feel comfortable around horses and confident in the kind of care and attention they deserve.
🌈 Inclusive, Adult-Friendly, and Judgment-Free
We specialize in teaching adult amateurs. That means we understand the unique challenges—and strengths—you bring. Whether you’re totally new, returning after years away, or just want a deeper understanding of these animals, you’ll find a supportive, inclusive environment here. No pressure, no perfectionism, and no assumptions.
We’re also LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent friendly, and we’re committed to creating a barn culture that is safe, respectful, and welcoming to all.

📅 Lesson Format
We offer a monthly tuition-based program, much like other regular activities such as sports teams, music lessons, or a gym membership. This structure secures a consistent weekly lesson time (or multiple sessions if space allows) and encourages steady progress.
✨ What’s Included:
One riding or horsemanship lesson per week
Monthly unmounted group horsemanship class
Access to barn events and learning opportunities
Our horseback riding lessons blend English riding skills with hands-on horse care and foundational horsemanship. Lessons are private one-on-one sessions that last from 45-60 minutes.
We run lessons 48 weeks per year, with one break week each quarter to give our hardworking horses some well-deserved time off. Breaks are aligned with major holidays and local school schedules. During these weeks, students may be invited to join additional unmounted classes or workshops.
